Shorts and singlets were the uniform of the day at the 10th running of this race, as temperatures soared into the 50’s. Tom Dann of Kennebunk, winner of the Fore River Challenge half marathon and the New Year’s Portland 5K, could not stay with the surge delivered at 7 miles by Chip Pierce of Westfield, Vermont and had to settle for a 2nd place finish. Pierce’s time of 52:56 compared closely with Todd Coffin’s course record of 52:11 set last year.* Mary Ann Doss held off Christine Braceras’ late surge for 2nd place behind another strong performance by Veronica Knight. Race directors Maria Keefe and Bob Payne report a record field of 206 official finishers on this TAC certified course. They promised similar weather conditions for future Maine Track Club Races!
*Research shows the course record at the time was actually 51:55 and set in 1985.
